Concession lines were a long despite all of the stands being open
I thought some concession items were pricey (especially soda) compared to other independent league parks (except for soft pretzels which were $2.50 in 2009).
No one was monitoring the condiment station and at one time throughout the night there was a mountain of ketchup on the counter. I think someone just walked along and decided to pump the ketchup several times on to the counter.
Before entering Alexian Field, take note of the beautiful landscaping outside the stadium. This park is one of the nicest parks that I have seen from the outside.
Alexian Field has some features which are similar to Wrigley Field. First, the dimensions of the field are the same as Wrigley. Second, the 1st base side dugout is bent, just like a Wrigley. Lastly, there is a manual scoreboard in left field.
One very odd feature to Alexian Field is the stairway that leads to the concourse. Fans who enter through the front of the park go through doors and then up an enclosed stairway. I have never seen anything like this! Was this a mistake? I wonder what they were thinking when they designed this park.
Another feature of the park that I did not care for were the advertisements placed on the rest room doors in the concourse.
Along the 1st and 3rd base side toward the outfield corners, there are grassy berm areas. In left field, there is a set of bleachers which are used as a picnic area (Miller Lite Party Deck).
The atmosphere at Alexian Field is similar to many of the other newer parks. There are a lot of sound effects played as well as in-between innings contests. There were a lot of random movie quotes used as sound bytes throughout that game that had no connection to what was going on, on the field (at least not that I could figure out). I found this to be a little obnoxious.
The main reason behind the low "Atmosphere/Character" score for Alexian field is due to the fact that there are cheerleaders on the field in between some of the innings. This is baseball, not football. There are so many things wrong with this, I can't even get into it. This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. I know some people will say this was a dance team.....dance team, cheerleaders...same thing...neither should be on the field at a baseball game.
Another strange aspect of the atmosphere was that the "Bat Girl" actually was a "Batgirl". She ran onto the field with a cape and retrieved the bats. It just looked silly to me. Sorry.
There was one unique contest which took place in the 7th inning. One fan was stuck with velcro to a wall above right field and had the chance to catch homerun ball and win a prize. I don't remember exactly what the prize was, but it was something big....money or a car or something.
Near Alexian Field is a very small airport. Throughout the game, you will see small planes overhead heading for a landing just beyond the right field wall. This adds a little character to the park.
